I worked in the newsroom over the summer of 2024, supporting reporters through the full production of daily news pieces. That meant going out on location every day: filming shots, finding people on the street willing to speak on camera, and handling equipment. Back in the newsroom, editing video and audio, selecting shots, and writing prompter copy for the anchor to read on air. Around seventy broadcast pieces at daily deadline.

Most of the work happens before anything is written. Finding someone on the street who will speak on camera about rising rents, or the state of their pavement, is a matter of approaching a stranger and giving them a reason to trust you within thirty seconds. Then comes the editing: deciding which three seconds of a press conference carry the story, and writing copy that has to work spoken rather than read, land within a fixed number of seconds, and be understood the first time — there is no going back over a sentence on live television.

A daily newsroom teaches you to work at the speed of the news rather than the speed of the writing. But the part that stayed with me is the street work. Getting a stranger to talk to you on camera, in the middle of their day, is the same skill as getting anyone to give you their attention when they had no plans to — which turns out to be most of what communications work is.
