Recardelino Album Review

How one article found its audience

New to the chapter and writing in a city where I had no readership, I approached my first piece as a communications problem.

I targeted the audience most likely to engage: online fan communities, loyal and hungry for content about their artists. I built an organic outreach strategy around them — sliding into the DMs of the key fan accounts to share the piece directly.

The response was immediate: fans were struck to find their favourite artist featured in a media outlet on the other side of the world. The article became the chapter's most-read, and was picked for the weekly "Into the Spotlight" selection.

Context

I wrote a review of Juanjo Bona's album Recardelino for Her Campus at St. John's, during my exchange semester. As a newcomer with no built-in audience, I had a piece I believed in and no one to read it.

What I did

I approached it as a communications problem. Instead of competing for a general audience I didn't have, I targeted the one most likely to engage: online fan communities, loyal and hungry for content about their artist. I built an organic outreach strategy around them — reaching the key fan accounts directly to share the piece.

The angle

Writing the piece was half the work; getting it read was the other half. The response was immediate — fans were struck to find their artist featured in a media outlet on the other side of the world, and shared it onward.

Takeaways

In communications, reaching the audience is half the job. Knowing not just how to write something but how to make it travel — identifying who's primed to care and going to them directly — is the skill this piece taught me.
